Waitomo glowworm caves from Rotorua
Waitomo's caves are famous for a ceiling of tiny blue-green lights, and the boat ride beneath them drifts along in near silence. From Rotorua, though, they mean about two hours on the road each way. This guide explains what you would see and how to get there. It also covers the glowworms you can find much closer to town, including one walk that comes free with the Mitai evening.
Two hours west of Rotorua
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves lie about 95 miles (150 km) west of Rotorua, roughly two hours by car. The highlight of a visit is a boat gliding under a cave ceiling lit by thousands of glowworms.
The distance is what you need to plan around. A return trip from Rotorua means about four hours of driving for a visit far shorter than that, so Waitomo fits better on the road into or out of Rotorua than as a there-and-back day. If your route allows that, it costs you little extra time.
What is glowing up there
New Zealand's glowworm, Arachnocampa luminosa, lives nowhere else on earth. It is not a worm at all but the larva of a fungus gnat. Each larva hangs threads of sticky silk below itself and glows to lure small flying insects into them, so a ceiling full of lights is a ceiling full of fishing lines. Light and noise make them dim, which is why guides ask for quiet and why the caves stay dark. On a cave tour you see the result at its densest, a sky of pale green-blue points with no stars between them.
Visiting the cave at Waitomo
If you have a car, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves guided tour, from ~$49, is the simple way in. It is sold on Viator, where it averages 4.4 from 1,250+ reviews, a little lower than most of the tours on this site. The catch is getting there, since the tour starts at the caves and you drive about two hours each way from Rotorua. Drive on the left, and allow time for lunch on the way, because a cave visit on an empty stomach after a long drive is nobody's best mood.
Without a car, the combination day is the other route. FlexiToursNZ's Hobbiton and Waitomo tour, from ~$271, collects you from central Rotorua in a small vehicle of 9 or 12 seats, walks you through the movie set with a drink at the Green Dragon, then spends about 45 minutes in Waitomo Glowworm Cave with a small boat ride. Its catch is stamina. The day runs 11–13 hours with a great deal of driving, and it is on GetYourGuide only. Hobbiton from Rotorua compares it with the shorter coach day to the Shire.

Glowworms without leaving Rotorua
Waitomo has the biggest display, yet you do not need a four-hour round trip to see glowworms. Three outings near town include them, each in a smaller setting.
| Where | From | From central Rotorua | What else you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitai's sacred spring | ~$96 | About 10 min | Waka, haka, hāngī dinner | Steps in the bush, not visible from the wheelchair-accessible area |
| Redwoods Glowworms | ~$82 | About 5 min | Two hours of high ropes first | Height and weight limits |
| Glowworm kayak | ~$127 | Lake about 15 min away | Sunset paddle, stars | Cold outside summer |
| Waitomo cave tour | ~$49 | About 2 h by car | The boat under the ceiling | Four hours of driving |
The glowworms closest to the Mitai dinner table live at Te Puna Tapu o Tūhoe, the sacred spring in the forest beside the village. The Mitai evening, from ~$96, ends its night with a short guided bush walk to the spring, where the water is clear enough to watch eels and trout, and the banks above glow faintly in the dark. They are a scattering rather than a Waitomo ceiling, and the path has steps and uneven ground. Glowworms cannot be seen from the wheelchair-accessible area. The Mitai evening, step by step places the walk in the night's running order.
Glowworms after dinner
Mitai's three-hour evening brings the waka on the stream and a hāngī buffet, then a guided walk to the spring where glowworms shine on the banks, from ~$96. Pickup from Rotorua accommodation is offered, subject to availability.
Redwoods and a kayak at dusk
Redwoods Altitude, from ~$82, finishes its two hours of high bridges and ziplines with Redwoods Glowworms, an above-ground eco-cave of living glowworms where you spend 10–15 minutes. It is the only glowworm stop in town you reach by clipping on a harness first, and the minimum height is about 4 ft 7 in (140 cm). Our Redwoods guide covers the forest and its other passes.
For something slower, Taiao Adventures' glowworm kayak, from ~$127, picks you up at the Rotorua i-SITE and drives about 15 minutes to a lake. You paddle out around sunset, slip into small glowworm caves after dark, and look at the stars on clear nights over the 3–4 hours. The catch is the temperature and the rules. Outside summer the evening gets cold on the water, so dress in layers as the listing says, and children must be 5 or older, each with one adult.
Seeing them at their brightest
- No flash. Never use a flash or a flashlight near glowworms. Light makes them dim, so keep phone screens dark and pocketed;
- Give your eyes time. The glow builds as your eyes adjust, so stand still for a minute before deciding there is little to see;
- Lower your voice. Noise dims them too, and a quiet group sees more;
- Expect variation. They glow all year. A bright or dry night can leave only a few showing on the banks at Mitai or in the lake caves. Wildlife is never guaranteed.
Glowworms glow in every month, so seasons matter less here than for rafting on the Kaituna; the best time to visit Rotorua has the rest. Families weighing the kayak against the evening at Mitai will find age rules in Rotorua with kids. Our plan for two or three days in Rotorua shows where a glowworm night fits.
